Episode 17: The Science of Sex Appeal: How Cis White People Choose Each Other

This week we watched Discovery Channel’s 2009, “The Science of Sex Appeal” documentary and learned all sorts of sexy science things. Genetics and hormones are a bitch, y’all.

Moral to the Story: Science experiments lack diversity and inclusion.

Other Fun Topics Discussed:

  • It all starts with the face.
  • Golden Ratio is the equation of perfection
  • We all start out symmetrical in the womb, but factors like not eating enough kale or coughing can cause asymmetry.
  • Curves = health and fertility but for some stupid reason humans judge extremes as most attractive.
  • In nature, males are the fancy ones. Human males use objects like cars and grillz to attract women.
  • Men like physical attractiveness. Ladies prefer status.
  • Kissing is important. Men’s saliva contains testosterone.
  • Copulance makes men go stupid. Ladies secrete this mind numbing hormone. It also smells like “butter gone off.”
  • Science is racist. Check out Sasheer Zamata’s look at Afrofuturism on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.
  • Mallory equates humans to dolphins and regales us with an amazing Drunk History segment about a scientific study that drugged dolphins with LSD and jerked them off to teach them to speak English.
  • We want to know what sex appeal looks like in the age of Tinder.

Season 2 – Ep. 1: “It’s been an honor and a privilege”

We are back for Season 2! And, it is our 1 year Podiversary! Thank you to all of you for listening and supporting us. We are so excited to start this new year with more romance-related shenanigans!

To kick it off, we decided to watch a movie that is beloved by many–just not us, James Cameron’s 1997 epic, “Titanic“. Take your Dramamine and get your floaties on and enjoy this amazing discussion of this watery love story. Did we mention, we only watched the last half of the movie?

Moral to the Story: White, heterosexual love survives.

Other Fun Topics Discussed:

  • Catching up on life after three months on break. Basically, winter sucks, work sucks.
  • Mallory was 10 years-old when she first saw Titanic and Kate Winslet was the first movie nudity she ever saw.
  • We both really hate this movie.
  • Mallory wanted to make sure we watched exactly half of this movie. We started at 1:36:01
  • Jack and Rose’s love caused the Titanic to hit the iceberg.
  • The reason for lack of diversity on the Titanic was slavery.
  • Mallory agrees with Roxane Gay: “It’s fucking bullshit that Jack dies. There is plenty of room on that door. I am going to bed.”
  • Mallory thought it would be a better use of time to build your own raft out of doors instead of running around.
  • Tamu’s Lesson Learned: Drink & be on the top deck.
  • Knowledge Check: learn about the systems that have led to financial inequality, and the current concentration of wealth and power. Watch or read Requiem for the American Dream
  • Every Rose and Jack scenario would end in Jack being dead EXCEPT for the one with the door.
  • How many life jackets did Rose get then leave?
  • Our favorite part of the movie is the quartet playing “Nearer my God to Thee.”
  • Love creates catastrophe.
  • They both really could have shared that door.
  • Jack’s thoughts as he freezes to death, “Me winning that ticket was the best thing that ever happened to me…not…glug…glug…glug.”
  • Remember “The Phantom“?
  • Class distinction hasn’t changed.
  • Bad at Love Theory: Jack would have lived if not for trying to save Rose.

Podcast Shout Outs:

Episode 15: Laura Linney, Oh How Could You Do That?!

There have been heated discussions between Tamu & Mallory about the holiday movie, Love Actually and whether it is actually problematic. Luckily when Jim and Ben were in town, they graciously agreed throw their hats into the ring regarding this “controversial” holiday film.

Moral to the Story: Love actually can spur debate.

Other Fun Topics Discussed:

  • Laura Linney made the biggest mistake of her life!
  • Ben LOVES Rodrigo Santoro.
  • At Christmas anything is possible.
  • Laura Linney is a national treasure.
  • Debate Question 1: Do you think Rodrigo was in love with Laura?
  • Ben reasons that we don’t see Rodrigo’s side of the story so it is difficult to know his feelings.
  • Tamu would feel guilty about not answering her brother’s phone call, but would have chose an orgasm.
  • Sometimes love is about forgiveness.
  • Debate Question 2: Did Emma Thompson forgive Professor Snape?
  • Question NOT up for Debate:  No one likes that necklace.
  • Love Actually is about love in all its forms.
  • Keira Knightley’s stalker.
  • Jim became a convert to Love Actually late in life.
  • Mallory felt that Hugh Grant’s love story was problematic because of the “big lady” (OR NOT AT ALL BIG) trope.
  • The difference between K-dramas and Rom-coms.
  • Mallory has a higher expectation of rom-coms.
  • Colin Firth is a world treasure.
  • Both characters tried to learn their paramour’s respective language.
  • Jim is also learning Portuguese.
  • Mallory found Liam Neeson’s story line to be problematic.
  • The bromance was not problematic per Mallory.
  • Ben just learned that Claudia Schiffer was actually in this movie.
  • Ben Recommends: Watching the cut scenes and director’s commentary.
  • Bad@Love wishes everyone a lovely holiday season filled with love, laughter and friendship.

Flutter: Fatal Attraction, the original ending

For Halloween, Mallory & Tamu watched Fatal Attraction and talked about the controversy surrounding film’s ending. Unfortunately, they neglected to Google the original film ending at the time. So today, they watched the original end of the movie and it was startlingly different.

Moral to the Story: No roll in the hay is worth hurting yourself.

Watch the original ending of Fatal Attraction.

Other Fun Topics Discussed:

  • Glenn Close meets a fatal end regardless of the ending.
  • Anne Archer should not ever run after Dan.
  • If the ending of the movie was the original edit, perhaps future movie tropes of “crazy women” and the pop culture surrounding it would be different.
  • The original edit really makes you think about mental illness.
  • Now that the times have changed, the movie should be reedited to the original version.
  • Bad at Love’s Alternate Ending: Glenn Close and Anne Archer kill Dan, take his insurance money and flee to Mexico where Glenn has her baby and everyone is happy. Sort of like Big Little Lies.

Flutter: Irresistible Mistakes…!

This week, Tamu and Mallory make unsurprising romantic choices when they play Irresistible Mistakes an online dating simulation game from Voltage, Inc. An otome game, this story-based game is targeted towards women.

Moral to the Story: Read a book, watch a movie, or play The Sims 4 instead.

Other Fun Topics Discussed:

The main character wakes up from a night of dirty, sexy times and DOES NOT SHOWER!

The use of …! for everything the main character is thinking.

Not shockingly Tamu ended up with someone who has closed himself off to love.

Unsurprisingly Mallory ended up with someone whose heart is unavailable.

Mallory Recommends: There is a pigeon simulation game called Hatoful Boyfriend that is her FAVORITE.  She says to keep playing, it isn’t how you think.

Other Fun Topics Discussed:

  • A lot of time was devoted to determine where the teeth are located.
  • Vagina Dentata
  • Marriage masturbation fantasy.
  • Toby is a fuck boy.
  • Masturbation would have solved a lot in Teeth.
  • Used sheets in a cave in a big “NO”.
  • The dog eats a peen.
  • What if Glenn Close’s character in Fatal Attraction had vagina dentata?
  • Poor dog. Poor rabbit. Oh well Glenn Close.
  • Women are ALWAYS the unhinged ones in these movies.
  • Dan is also a fuck boy.
  • Tamu wishes she had teeth in her vagina.
  • Mallory would take having teeth in her vagina too far.

Halloween season is kicking off with a bang thanks to the brave women and men who submitted their awkward date stories.

There were so many responses to requests for tales from dating that Tamu & Mallory ended up breaking them into three separate categories; Awkward, Creepy, and Scary.  Enjoy these awkward dating moments.

Moral to the Story: Yes, people can be awkward when it comes to dating and finding love; but, let’s treat one another with respect so we can all laugh about it later.

Tamu & Mallory wrap up summer with Jackie Collins, two bottles of wine, and, wild ideas.

Moral to the Story According to Mallory: Fuck love, overthrow the government!

Other Fun Topics Discussed:

  • Tamu reads the first story she ever typed on a computer when she was 12 or 13, “The Case of the Lonely Hearts”
  • She hates that she used the “f” word and apologizes for her early teen self profusely.
  • Mallory also wrote a novel when she was younger. A 900-page tome about love and Sailor Moon. She never backed up her data, so it is lost to the ages.
